A patient died early today (29 August) inside an ambulance after being trapped in a severe traffic jam on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway for nearly four hours while being taken to Dhaka for treatment.
The patient, Amirunnesa, a resident of Pran Bhagabatipur village in Chandraganj upazila of Lakshmipur, breathed her last at around 3:30am after the ambulance became stuck in the congestion near Cumilla’s Daudkandi.
Her relative Tarek Al Hasan told The Business Standard that Amirunnesa suffered a heart attack yesterday (28 August) and they left for Dhaka by ambulance at around 8pm last night.
The ambulance reached Daudkandi at about 11pm and became trapped in the severe traffic congestion, he said, adding that after remaining almost stationary for about four hours, she died inside the ambulance.
Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Premdas Roy told TBS that he learned about the patient’s death from the media.
He said the traffic situation has improved and vehicles are moving through all lanes of the highway.

A severe traffic jam stretched for nearly 50 kilometres from Ashirchar in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, to Kutumbpur in Chandina, Cumilla.
The congestion began after repair work started on a bridge at Ashirchar around 6pm yesterday and continued until about 1pm today.
The traffic situation improved after 1pm, although congestion remained up to Jinglatali in Daudkandi. However, the traffic flow was considerably better than earlier at the time of writing.
Passengers caught in the prolonged traffic jam said women, children and elderly people suffered greatly in the intense heat after being stranded for hours.
Many also faced shortages of food and drinking water.
