Police have arrested 11 people and seized yaba, cannabis, moonshine, knives and Tk90,000 in counterfeit notes in separate anti-crime drives in Bagerhat.
Eight people were arrested during a joint operation by Bagerhat district police and the Detective Branch (DB) in Nager Bazar and several other areas of the town today (26 August), Superintendent of Police Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar said at a press briefing.
The operation recovered 315 yaba tablets, 200g of cannabis, four litres of moonshine and 55 knives allegedly used in criminal activities.
The arrested are Bishnu Robi Das, 35, Paltu Robi Das, 35, Joy Robi Das, 25, Md Rifat, 24, Siraj, 20, Biplob Mistry, 36, Nimai Saha, 40, and Poli, 45.
In a separate DB operation near the pond adjacent to the Khan Jahan Ali shrine, three more people were arrested with Tk90,000 in counterfeit notes. All the seized notes were in Tk1,000 denominations.
The three are Md Aklas Bhuiya, 55, Ashikur Rahman Molla, 23, and Md Shiblu Fakir, 24.
Police said the drives were conducted by blocking several routes in the areas and searching people and houses in the presence of local witnesses.
Meanwhile, the Department of Narcotics Control arrested a woman with 10.43g of heroin in Maniknagar area of Rampal upazila.
Hafiza Khatun, 37, was arrested during the drive, said Md Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of the Bagerhat narcotics control office. A case has been filed against Hafiza and her husband, Billal Hossain Moral, under the Narcotics Control Act.
SP Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar said such operations would continue as part of efforts to make Bagerhat free of drugs.
