A tourist died after drowning while bathing in the sea at Cox’s Bazar beach this afternoon (26 August), while another went missing after being swept away by strong waves.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm in the sea near the Jol Taranga area of the beach, said Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Model Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Yasin Khan, 25, a resident of Korail Chowrasta in Dhaka. Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, 27, is still missing. Both were employees of IJET KP Company, according to their fellow tour members.
Mahbub Alam, a staff member deployed by the Cox’s Bazar district administration, said a group of around 110 people arrived in Cox’s Bazar in phases on 22 and 24 August and are currently staying at Hotel Vista Bay.
Two members of the group were swept away by waves while bathing in the sea in front of the Jol Taranga area. Yasin was rescued and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Lifeguards and Fire Service personnel are conducting a search for Ibrahim.
According to lifeguards, 26 tourists have died while bathing in the sea at Cox’s Bazar beach over the past year, while two others have gone missing.
