A Dhaka court today (25 August) placed Jibon alias Adil, 22, on a five-day remand in a case filed over the alleged assault, threats, and extortion attempt against Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital’s ENT and Head-Neck Surgery Department Professor Md Asadur Rahman.
Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Atikuzzaman, also the case’s investigating officer, produced Adil before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat’s court granted the five-day remand after hearing both sides.
The remand petition said the accused are members of an organised criminal gang and the remand was needed to identify and arrest the absconding accused and determine whether Adil is involved with other criminal gangs.
According to the case statement, Professor Asadur Rahman was stopped by Jibon and five to six unidentified people at around 10:45pm on 17 August while he was getting into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after seeing patients at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar.
The accused allegedly dragged him out and repeatedly beat him, leaving severe injuries to his right eye, lips, and other parts of his body.
Passers-by detained Jibon after hearing the doctor’s cry for help, while the others fled the scene. Police later took him into custody.
Professor Asadur Rahman later filed the case with Paltan Model Police Station on 18 August.
