Eight people, including three accused named in the case, have been arrested over the stabbing death of Mohammad Sakib in public in Chattogram’s Chandgaon following a dispute over a mobile phone, RAB-7 said.
The arrests were made within 48 hours of the killing following raids in different parts of Chattogram city, Chattogram district and Cox’s Bazar, said Lieutenant Commander Md Tawhidul Islam, company commander of CPC-3 of RAB-7.
He made the disclosure at a press briefing in Bahaddarhat, Chandgaon, around 3pm today (23 August).
The arrested are Md Emon, 22; Md Raihan, 25; Md Shahed Salman, 22; Mohammad Hossain, 22; Hasan Mohammad Robiul, 21; Md Sakib Hossain, 18; Md Achman, 23; and Md Faisal, 23.
RAB also recovered a locally made Chinese axe and a switchblade knife allegedly used in the killing.
The victim, Mohammad Sakib, was a resident of Char Rangamatiya in Chandgaon and worked at a flour mill in the Chandgaon BSCIC area.
According to RAB, around eight to 10 days before the killing, Emon allegedly forcibly took a mobile phone from a person named Adnan. Sakib protested, and locals later helped recover the phone from Emon.
The incident led to a dispute between Sakib, Emon and Raihan, RAB said.
On 20 August, around 6:30pm, Sakib was returning home from the Mohra Moulvi Bazar area in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw with his neighbour Nabil Hasan Jisan.
When they reached in front of Layla Community Centre in Mohra Kamal Bazar, several people allegedly waiting there stopped the vehicle.
RAB said Emon grabbed Sakib by the collar, pulled him out of the auto-rickshaw and attacked him with a sharp weapon. Emon, Raihan, Shahed Salman and others then allegedly stabbed Sakib repeatedly, leaving him critically injured.
The attackers fled the scene after the incident, according to RAB.
Locals rescued Sakib and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sakib’s father later filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station naming three people and six to seven unnamed accused.
The case was filed under provisions relating to unlawful assembly, wrongful confinement or restraint, murder and offences committed with common intention.
RAB said its teams conducted raids across Chattogram city, Chattogram district and Cox’s Bazar on Sunday and arrested the eight suspects.
Legal proceedings against the detainees are underway, RAB said.
