The Khelafat Majlis has said the failures of the BNP-led government have outweighed its achievements during its first six months in office.
The party made the remarks in a review of the government’s performance at its weekly central executive meeting held at its Paltan office yesterday (19 August) with presided over by Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Abdul Basit Azad and conducted by Secretary General Dr Ahmad Abdul Kader, reads a press release issued today (20 August).
Khelafat Majlis said continued support for July uprising martyrs and the injured, administrative cost-cutting measures, initiatives to reopen closed industrial units and some agricultural loan waiver programmes could be considered among the government’s achievements.
However, it said public suffering had reached an extreme level due to high inflation, gas and electricity shortages and a lack of improvement in the law and order situation. The party also criticised the government for failing to provide immediate assurances on energy security and alleged that partisan and unqualified individuals were being appointed to key administrative positions, including in the Local Government Division.
Calls for Constitution Reform Council
The party leaders also expressed concern that the BNP was seeking to amend the Constitution through its own mechanism while ignoring what they described as the popular mandate of the majority.
They said the public wants constitutional reforms that would permanently prevent the restoration of autocracy and fascism. To achieve this, they called for full implementation of the July National Charter and the referendum outcome through the formation of a Constitution Reform Council with constituent powers to make fundamental structural changes.
“The majority of the population has already granted this authority by voting ‘Yes’ in the referendum,” the leaders said. “Respecting the public mandate, we demand that the government take effective steps to form a Constitution Reform Council in parliament immediately and fully implement the July Charter,” they said.
The party also demanded measures to expedite the trials of those involved in the July and Shapla massacres.
