A court in Bogura has sentenced a man to death for raping his daughter. He was also fined Tk2 lakh.
Judge and District and Sessions Judge of the Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Maruf Hossain pronounced the verdict at around 10:30am today (20 August).
The convict is Abdul Khalek, 51, a resident of Bagara Basti area in Sherpur upazila. He was present in court when the verdict was announced, said Ali Asgar, public prosecutor of the Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
According to the case statement and court sources, Abdul Khalek raped his daughter at around 4:30am on 21 October 2020. At the time, the girl’s stepmother had gone to a local rice mill to boil paddy.
The case statement said the girl was threatened with death if she told anyone about the incident. Her behaviour later changed. When she stopped doing household chores, her stepmother beat her. At one point, the girl told her stepmother that her father had raped her.
However, the stepmother did not believe the allegation against her husband and instead subjected the girl to further abuse. The girl later told two of her classmates about the incident to escape the abuse.
The matter came to light through the classmates, after which local residents informed the police. On 31 October 2020, the girl’s mother, who is the accused’s second wife, filed a case against Abdul Khalek at Sherpur Police Station.
Public prosecutor Ali Asgar said the court sentenced the sole accused, Abdul Khalek, to death after reviewing the evidence and testimony presented by the prosecution. The court also fined him Tk2 lakh.
