Nine Bangladeshi nationals were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata’s Mirza Ghalib Street in the early hours today (19 August), according to officials.
According to a report by ANI, all nine people who died in the blaze were Bangladeshi nationals who had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment. The fire broke out at around 2am, prompting fire and emergency services to rush to the scene.
Several people reportedly lost consciousness after inhaling smoke and were rescued before being taken to hospital.
Firefighters carried out rescue and firefighting operations and eventually brought the blaze under control.
The six injured people were taken to hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Visuals from the scene showed the hotel located in an ageing building along a densely built-up stretch.
Authorities are investigating the incident and are expected to inspect the hotel premises to determine how the fire started.
