Highway Police will launch an AI-based auto fine system on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway from 18 August to detect traffic violations and send case information to vehicle owners by SMS.
Highway Police Additional DIG (Media) Muntasirul Islam disclosed the information in a press release today (15 August).
From Tuesday, AI-powered cameras will detect vehicles exceeding speed limits, parking illegally, driving on the wrong side and committing other traffic violations. Action will be taken against violators under existing laws.
Once a violation is detected, details of the case will be sent automatically by SMS to the mobile phone number registered against the vehicle.
Vehicle owners will then be able to pay the applicable fines through mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad, following the prescribed procedure.
Highway Police said the technology-based system will enable faster detection of traffic violations, preservation of relevant information and collection of fines in a more transparent, accurate and efficient manner.
The initiative is also expected to raise public awareness about traffic laws, improve discipline on the highway and help reduce road accidents, the police said.
Earlier, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Division introduced an automated traffic signal system and AI cameras in the capital to improve road discipline.
