A crude bomb exploded as police moved in to disperse a flash procession allegedly organised by activists of the activities-banned Awami League in Dhaka’s Mohakhali today (11 August), with four people arrested from the area.
The incident took place around 1:25pm near Muktijoddha Goli, adjacent to the Institute of Public Health, said police.
The four arrested are Aslam Mia, 25, Ashikul Islam, 24, Mahfuzur Rahman Siam, 19 and Monir Hossain, 48.
Police said a group of people was preparing to bring out a procession under the banner of the Dhaka North unit of the Awami League when officers, assisted by local residents, moved to the area.
As police approached, a crude bomb was detonated and the rest of the group fled, according to Banani Police Investigation Inspector Mehedi Hasan. Police later recovered fragments of the exploded device from the scene.
Police sources said Aslam and Ashikul are activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Government Bangla College unit and fourth-year BBA students at the college.
Legal action is underway against the arrested individuals, while police are also preparing a case under the Explosives Act and on charges related to sabotage, according to police.
