Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have recovered 2.46 lakh yaba pills, a foreign-made pistol and five rounds of ammunition during a special operation along the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari upazila.
The recovery was made around 12:15am yesterday (10 August) near Border Pillar-31 in the Nayapara area, according to a press release issued by Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB).
Acting on intelligence that a group of drug traffickers would attempt to smuggle a large consignment of yaba along with firearms and ammunition from Myanmar into Bangladesh, a BGB team led by Major Mehedi Hasan Ashik, deputy commander of the battalion, launched the operation around 11pm on 9 August.
During the operation, BGB personnel spotted several suspected smugglers approaching the Nayapara area near Border Pillar-31 and challenged them.
The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the yaba pills, a foreign-made pistol and five rounds of ammunition, the release said.
BGB personnel later recovered the abandoned items.
Legal action is being taken over the seized drugs, firearm and ammunition, according to the release.
Lt Col SM Khairul Alam, commander of Cox’s Bazar Battalion, said the BGB remains committed to maintaining border security and preventing drug trafficking, smuggling and the movement of illegal firearms.
He said the battalion regularly conducts operations against drug trafficking, smuggling and other illegal activities along the border.
“Such effective operations by BGB are further strengthening the sense of security and confidence among people living in border areas,” he said, adding that anti-drug and border security operations would continue.
