Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque has said if the referendum held at a cost of thousands of crores of taka was illegal, then the current government is also illegal.
“Thousands of crores of taka were spent to hold the referendum, and 70% of the country’s people voted ‘Yes’. Now Home Minister Salahuddin [Ahmed] Shaheb is saying that the referendum was supposedly illegal. If the referendum was illegal, then the current government is also illegal,” he told a rally organised by the upazila unit of his party at Sadarpur Stadium in Faridpur yesterday evening (9 August).
Mamunul said, “Our movement is not aimed at bringing down the government; rather, our movement is for implementing the verdict of the referendum.”
He further said 33 political parties had jointly discussed and formulated the July Charter, following which a referendum was held to implement it.
“The people have given a mandate to implement the July Charter, and the charter must be implemented in accordance with the will of the people,” he said.
He further alleged that the entire administration had been politicised during the previous fascist government.
“After Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and Helmet League, they created another force called ‘Police League’. We do not want any new police organisation affiliated with Chhatra Dal or Jubo Dal to be created,” he said.
He called for the establishment of an independent and neutral service commission to oversee all government recruitment.
