Two people were killed and several others injured after lorry ran over multiple vehicles in front of Grand Shopping Complex in Dhaka’s Moghbazar last night (9 August).
The accident occurred after the speeding lorry reportedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles, including a motorcycle and a pickup van, leaving them crushed.
The deceased were identified as Riyad Hossain, 22, and Zaman Ahmed, 42.
Both were residents of Madhurgati Fakirpara village in Narail Sadar upazila.
Riyad was the son of Liaquat Fakir, while Zaman was the son of Elias Fakir.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, the lorry lost control while travelling at high speed on the road in front of Grand Shopping Complex and crashed into several vehicles ahead of it, including a motorcycle and a pickup van.
Several people sustained critical injuries in the accident, they added.
The injured were rescued and rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Doctors pronounced Riyad and Zaman dead at around 12:30am while they were undergoing treatment.
Ripon, 40, who was also injured in the accident, is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH and is reportedly in critical condition.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the deaths, saying the two men were brought to the hospital with critical injuries sustained in the road accident and were subsequently declared dead by doctors.
The bodies have been kept at the DMCH emergency department morgue for autopsy.
The matter has been reported to the Ramna Model Police Station.
