At least 12 people were injured in a clash between members of Chhatra Dal and the banned Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League in Satkhira last night (8 August).
Following the clash, which took place around 11pm in the Sridanga area under Ghona union of Satkhira Sadar upazila, eight injured individuals from the Chhatra Dal group were rescued and admitted to Satkhira Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, two members from the other group were hospitalised – one at Satkhira Sadar Hospital and another at the medical college hospital.
Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said a clash has taken place between two opposing groups and the injured are receiving treatment. He added that the situation in the area is currently under control and that legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is lodged.
According to Manjurul Alam Bappi, senior vice president of the district Chhatra Dal, Chhatra League leader Najmul, who is the son of a local Awami League leader, used abusive language targeting the BNP and its student wing Chhatra Dal.
When Jahid Hasan, president of Ghona union Chhatra Dal, confronted the Chhatra League leader regarding his behaviour, the former was detained, according to Bappi. “Upon receiving the news, I went to the spot to rescue him,” he said.
He continued, “As we were returning, local Awami League and Chhatra League leaders and activists, along with local drug dealers, launched an unprovoked attack on us using sticks and local weapons. A clash ensued, leaving 10 to 12 people from both sides injured.”
Satkhira Chhatra Dal General Secretary Arghya said the attack was led by Chhatra League leader Najmul, Jubo League leader Khalid and Awami League leader Laltu.
Attempts to contact local Awami League and Chhatra League leaders for comment were unsuccessful.
