A Dhaka court today (5 August) sent former joint secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha to jail in a case over the alleged attempted murder of former prime minister Khaleda Zia during an incident outside her Gulshan residence in December 2013.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after police produced Pasha before the court.
The court also set tomorrow (6 August) to hear a 10-day remand petition filed by the investigation officer.
The information was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division.
According to police, detectives arrested Pasha from his residence in Bashundhara yesterday (4 August).
Investigation Officer Inspector Anwar Hossain of Gulshan Zone sought a 10-day remand, saying Pasha needed to be questioned to uncover the full circumstances of the case and identify other absconding suspects.
The case, filed with Gulshan Police Station in October 2024, alleges that on 28-29 December 2013, Pasha, along with more than 100 named accused and 250 to 300 unidentified individuals, blocked roads leading to Khaleda Zia’s residence by placing sand-laden trucks and other vehicles on the route to prevent her from attending a political rally.
According to the first information report (FIR), pepper spray was also used during the incident with the alleged intent to kill Khaleda Zia.
The complaint further alleges that she, along with several BNP leaders and activists accompanying her, sustained injuries in the incident.
