2 tourists found dead in Bandarban ravine after ignoring guide’s warning

Police have recovered the bodies of two tourists from a mountain ravine near the Boga Lake Viewpoint in Keokradong, Ruma upazila of Bandarban.

The bodies were recovered at around 11pm last night (30 July) from the ravine beside the Ruma–Keokradong road near the Boga Lake Viewpoint.

The deceased were identified as Jamir Uddin, 32, son of Zahir Uddin from Boro Manika in Borhanuddin upazila of Bhola, and Rokaiya Akter, 30, daughter of Md Chunnu Gazi from the Posta TSO area under Lalbagh Police Station in Dhaka.

Quoting the group’s tour guide, Ruma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manas Barua said a group of 10 tourists left Dhaka on six motorcycles at around 11:30pm on Wednesday (29 July) and travelled to Ruma.

They reached the Boga Lake area at around 2:30pm on Thursday and checked into a cottage for an overnight stay.

“At around 5:30pm, the group visited the Boga Lake Viewpoint. After taking photographs, eight members returned. However, Jamir Uddin and Rokaiya Akter ignored the guide’s warning and rode their motorcycle beyond the viewpoint towards the road ahead,” the OC said.

The guide, Md Ismail, informed the Boga Lake Army Camp at around 6pm. A joint search operation involving the Bangladesh Army, police, and local residents was launched, and the two bodies were recovered from a nearby mountain ravine at around 11pm.

“The bodies of the two tourists have been recovered from a mountain ravine near the Boga Lake Viewpoint. Necessary legal procedures are underway, and the actual cause of the incident is being investigated,” said OC Manas Barua.
