A nearly 15-foot-long Burmese python was rescued from a waterlogged ditch near Gate No. 2 of the Chittagong University (CU) campus today (30 July) and later released into the university’s forest.
The rescue operation was carried out around 12pm by members of the Society for Snake and Snakebite Awareness (3SA).
According to the organisation, the python measured around 15 feet in length and weighed an estimated 14 to 15 kilograms.
The snake was first spotted by CU student Simon Sakib near the gate, and he informed 3SA. Being informed, 3SA members Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Mobarak Mia rushed to the scene and safely rescued the reptile.
Mohammad Imran, a member of 3SA, said the python was later released into a deep forest within the university premises.
He said snakes of this kind often stray into human settlements due to food scarcity, habitat loss caused by hill cutting and other environmental pressures.
