Two accused in the case over Bailey Road fire that killed 46 people surrendered before a Dhaka court and secured bail today (29 July).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana granted bail to Amin Mohammad Foundation proprietor Md Ramjanul Haque Nihad and Fuko Restaurant proprietor Russell Ahmed on bonds of Tk500 each.
Lawyer Zahid Hasan moved for bail on behalf of Nihad, while Pradip Ranjan Debnath appeared for Russell.
The development was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division.
The case stems from the devastating fire at the Green Cozy Cottage building on Bailey Road on 29 February 2024, which left 46 people dead.
On 19 April this year, the court accepted Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) charge sheet against 22 accused, including several restaurant owners, and issued arrest warrants for 13 who remained absconding.
According to the charge sheet, the accused operated restaurants without obtaining the legal approvals from relevant authorities and violated safety regulations by using gas cylinders and electric ovens unlawfully. CID alleged these violations contributed to the fire.
The charge sheet was submitted to the court on 2 April by CID Inspector Shah Jalal Munshi. The case was filed by Ramna Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Shahidul Islam following the fire.
