Ex-MP Tanveer Imam shown arrested in July Uprising attempted murder case

A Dhaka court today (28 July) granted a police application to show former Sirajganj-4 MP Tanveer Imam arrested in a case filed over the attempted murder of a van driver during the July Uprising in the capital’s Gulshan area.

After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman ordered that Tanveer Imam be shown arrested in the case and sent him to jail.

Police produced the former MP before the court, where the investigating officer, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdus Salam, argued that evidence had been found suggesting Tanveer Imam instructed the accused to open fire on the victim and provided financial support in connection with the incident.

He told the court that showing him arrested in the case was necessary for the sake of a proper investigation.

Police had filed the application on 14 July while Tanveer Imam was already in jail in connection with other cases.

According to the case statement, van driver Jabbar Ali Hawlader was shot during the July Uprising on 19 July 2024 in front of Confidence Tower in Shahjadpur, Gulshan, when police and Awami League activists allegedly opened fire on protesters.

Jabbar later filed an attempted murder case with Gulshan Police Station on 11 December 2024, naming 109 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Tanveer was arrested from the capital’s Gulshan area on 18 September 2024 and has remained in jail since being sent to prison the following day in connection with a murder case filed with Badda Police Station.
