4 confess in court over Jubo Dal activist’s murder; 5 sent to jail

Four accused have given confessional statements before separate Dhaka courts in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal activist Yusuf Ali, also known as Parvez, who was shot dead in the capital’s Kafrul area last week.

The four – Jihad Molla, Masum Billah, Nahid Hasan and Abir Hawlader – recorded their confessions before separate metropolitan magistrates yesterday (27 July).

After recording their statements, the courts ordered that they be sent to jail, confirmed Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Wazed Ali Khan.

The case’s investigating officer, Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Raihan Hossain of the Pallabi Zonal Team, had produced seven accused before the courts, seeking to record confessional statements from four of them and requesting that the remaining three be sent to jail.

Another accused, Jiarul Molla, was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam but declined to make a confessional statement. The court subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail.

In a separate order, Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam sent Ali Hossain and Shafin Ahmed to jail following a petition by the investigating officer.

Earlier, on Saturday (26 July), police arrested the seven accused from a garage near Mina Bazar at the Five-Road intersection in Mirpur-13.

According to the murder case, Yusuf was talking with several others, including Kafrul Thana BNP Member Secretary Md Hafizul Islam Babu, in the Kafrul area at around 11pm on 24 July when the attack took place.

The complaint alleges that Chanchal Molla and his armed associates launched a premeditated attack, opening fire on Yusuf. A bullet struck him in the right side of the chest and exited through his back.

As panic spread, the attackers allegedly fired indiscriminately, leaving vegetable vendor Nalam Sardar and passer-by Md Monir Hossain seriously injured.

All three were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Yusuf later died while undergoing treatment.

Police said members of the public caught Chanchal while he was attempting to flee near Mirpur-13. He was assaulted before being handed over to police.

Officers recovered a foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition from his possession.

During interrogation, Chanchal allegedly identified himself and named Jihad Molla, Jiarul Molla, Hasan and several others as his associates. Police subsequently filed a case under the Arms Act with Kafrul Police Station.

Yusuf’s brother later filed a separate murder case over the killing.
