The prosecution has filed formal charges against 19 people in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of Ashabul Yamin in Savar during the July Uprising.
The charges were submitted to the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal today (26 July).
The prosecution said the 19 accused were named following a lengthy investigation. It filed the formal charges after reviewing the investigation agency’s report. A hearing on the charges is scheduled to be held today.
Seven of the accused are currently in jail. They are former Dhaka additional superintendent of police (Crime and Operations) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam, former assistant sub-inspector Mohammad Ali, former police nayeks Sohel, Mizanur Rahman, Zakir Hossain and former constable Masud Mia.
Yamin was a fourth-year student of computer science and engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology.
According to the case statement, police and Awami League activists attacked a peaceful demonstration organised by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Savar Bazar Bus Stand on 18 July 2024.
The attackers dragged Yamin towards a police armoured vehicle and shot him in the left side of his chest at around 1:30pm, leaving him with numerous splinter injuries.
Police personnel then dragged him onto the armoured vehicle and drove it back and forth to intimidate the protesting students and members of the public.
He was later thrown onto the road in a nearly lifeless condition. A police officer was also ordered to get out of the vehicle and shoot Yamin in the leg.
Believing Yamin to be dead, the officer did not shoot him again but dragged him across the road and left him beside a road divider. Yamin was still seen breathing at the time.
Local people later rescued him and took him to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared him dead.
