Khelafat Majlis today (25 July) announced its withdrawal from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party political alliance.
The decision was taken at the party’s third general meeting of its central majlis-e-shura at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in the capital, according to a press release signed by the party’s central publicity secretary, Engineer Abdul Hafiz Khasru.
The party said it would not participate in any future programmes or activities of the alliance.
However, it said it may consider joining a broader coalition in the future if circumstances require.
According to party sources, after the 11-party alliance’s divisional rally in Chattogram on 13 June, Khelafat Majlis formally requested that the alliance stop using the party’s name and those of its leaders on banners and other promotional materials for future events.
The party’s name was later used at a rally in Rangpur but was removed following objections from Khelafat Majlis, the sources said.
Since then, its name has not appeared in alliance programmes.
Party leaders also said that although Khelafat Majlis was part of the alliance’s initial understanding and maintained limited participation in some post-election programmes, it has stayed away from alliance activities in recent weeks.
