Following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will serve as acting president, while Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal will assume the responsibilities of speaker.
Speaking at a press conference at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 5:30pm today (24 July), Hafiz said he had already taken the oath to serve as acting president when he was sworn in as speaker.
“You know that on the day I took the oath as speaker, I also took the oath as acting president, if required,” he said.
Hafiz added that the deputy speaker’s oath similarly provides for assuming the speaker’s responsibilities if the office becomes vacant for any reason.
“In the same way, when the deputy speaker takes the oath, it states that if the speaker’s chair becomes vacant for any reason, the deputy speaker will perform the duties of the speaker,” he said.
