National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will discharge the duties of the president following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin due to health issues.
Shahabuddin submitted his signed resignation letter to the speaker today (24 July), vacating the office of the president.
Under Article 54 of the Constitution, the speaker assumes the responsibilities of the president until a new president is elected whenever the office falls vacant or the president is unable to perform his or her duties due to absence, illness or any other reason.
Article 50(3) of the Constitution provides that the president may resign by submitting a signed letter addressed to the speaker.
According to Article 123(2), if the office of the president becomes vacant due to death, resignation or removal, a new president must be elected within 90 days.
Under Article 48(1) of the Constitution, the president is elected by the members of parliament.
