Sub-inspector stabbed in Mohammadpur, receives 43 stitches

An unidentified assailant stabbed a police sub-inspector (SI) in the Kaderabad Housing area of Dhaka’s Mohammadpur last night (23 July), leaving him with injuries that required 43 stitches.

Md Osman Gani, who serves in the Immigration Branch of the Special Branch (SB) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, was stabbed around 9:30pm on Road 4 of C Block in Kaderabad Housing, Mohammadpur.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Abdullah Al Mamun said this afternoon, “It was not a mugging incident. After speaking to the victim, it appears the attack may have been linked to previous enmity.”

Police are trying to identify and arrest those involved, he added.

Quoting the injured officer, the AC said three unidentified individuals contacted Osman Gani by phone at around 8:45am on Wednesday (22 July), asking him to come to the gate of his residence to discuss a passport-related matter.

The SI suspects the attack may have been carried out over a previous dispute, he added.

According to eyewitnesses and multiple officers at Mohammadpur Police Station, Osman Gani was returning home with his wife, Tanzina Sima, and their only child after grocery shopping at around 9pm yesterday when an unidentified assailant stabbed him in the back from behind before fleeing the scene.

Despite being injured, the police officer chased the attacker but failed to catch him.

He initially received treatment at a local clinic before being admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Hospital sources said the injured officer required at least 43 stitches to his back, which sustained extensive injuries.
