Authorities have seized around 16 kgs of smuggled gold, valued at an estimated Tk35 crore, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The gold was recovered from a wooden crate carried on Cathay Pacific flight CX67 from Hong Kong during a joint operation by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Dhaka Customs House today (19 July).
Dhaka Customs House Additional Commissioner Muhammad Kamrul Hassan told The Business Standard that the shipment was imported in the name of a company called Food Link, based in Uttarkhan, Dhaka.
“The wooden crate was searched at Gate 8-Alfa based on intelligence information, leading to the recovery of the gold,” he said.
Kamrul Hassan said he could not immediately identify the customs clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent representing the importing company.
No one has been arrested in connection with the seizure so far, he said, adding that preparations are underway to file a criminal case.
The latest seizure comes less than three weeks after authorities recovered nearly 15kg of smuggled gold at the airport in a similar operation on 2 July, also based on intelligence provided by the DGFI.
