Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today (18 July) said the government has taken up a range of initiatives, including the construction of sustainable embankments, to better protect different areas from floods and tidal surges.
The government has prioritised long-term flood protection and the rehabilitation of affected families, the minister said while inaugurating a project to build 100 houses for families affected by recent floods.
Salahuddin stated that the government’s main priority is to protect people’s welfare.
As a government elected by the people, it remains committed to standing beside citizens during any disaster or crisis, he added.
“The government is working with the principle of ‘Bangladesh first, people before power,'” he said.
The minister said government support will go beyond rebuilding damaged homes; it will also assist flood-hit farmers, fish farmers and livestock rearers.
Farmers who have lost seedbeds, seedlings or cropland will receive fertiliser, seeds and other agricultural inputs, he added.
The government will also assess losses in the fisheries and livestock sectors before providing assistance, Salahuddin mentioned.
He said the authorities will move quickly to repair flood-damaged infrastructure, including schools, colleges, madrasas, roads and other public facilities.
He added that the government will continue to stand beside the people and work to ensure justice.
The home minister said the government is following people-friendly and pro-poor policies to ease pressure on the general public and deliver services to their doorsteps.
After the programme, Salahuddin met members of flood-affected families, enquired about their condition and inspected the relief materials distributed among them.
He later visited several flood-hit areas in Pekua.
