Low-lying areas in Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura upazila have been inundated by continuous rainfall and hill runoff from India’s Tripura, raising fears of flooding in the border area.
The rising water has also entered several business establishments near the Kalandi canal adjacent to Akhaura Land Port.
However, passenger movement and commercial activities at the port remain normal.
Meanwhile, Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tapasi Rabeya said no flood situation had developed so far, adding that water levels in the area’s rivers remain below the danger mark.
“Although the situation is still under control, we have already taken a number of precautionary measures as part of our flood preparedness,” she said.
According to local sources, continuous rainfall over the past several days, coupled with hill runoff flowing in from Tripura since this morning (13 July) morning, has caused water levels to rise in low-lying areas surrounding the land port. Water has also entered several houses in the area.
The increased water level in the Kalandi canal has inundated a number of nearby business establishments. As floodwater has not yet reached the port’s main road, cross-border trade and passenger movement have continued without disruption.
However, local residents fear that several villages adjacent to the land port could be flooded if the inflow of hill runoff continues.
