The government is planning to install another 8,000 airflow machines in major onion-producing areas to reduce post-harvest losses of onions and garlic and ensure fair prices for farmers, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told parliament today (8 July).
In a written reply to a question from Faridpur-4 lawmaker Md Shahidul Islam during the question-answer session of parliament, he said that under the project titled “Onion Storage in Bangladesh’s Onion-Producing Areas through Partnership to Mitigate the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change,” 3,500 airflow machines have already been distributed.
Besides, under the ongoing project “Modernisation of Onion and Garlic Storage Methods at the Farmer Level and Improvement of Marketing Activities,” 900 model storage houses have been built in Faridpur and other onion- and garlic-producing districts, he added.

The prime minister further said 19,000 farmers received airflow machines for onion storage under the incentive and rehabilitation programme for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
He added that a new project titled “Modernisation of Onion and Garlic Storage through Air Flow Method and Improvement of Marketing Activities” is now being formulated.
The technology will significantly reduce wastage of onions and garlic and allow farmers to sell their produce at fair prices after the harvest season, the prime minister added.
