At least one person was killed and around 30 others injured after residents of two neighbouring villages clashed in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria last night (28 June) over a dispute involving an alleged interest payment.
The deceased was identified as Md Hadim.
The clash broke out at around 8:45pm at Kalikachh Bazar under Kalikachh Union, where residents of Suryakandi and Dharanti villages reportedly confronted each other using torches in the darkness.
According to police and local sources, Mosharaf Mia, a resident of Suryakandi village, claimed that Khadem Molla of neighbouring Dharanti village owed him Tk100,000 in interest payments. When Khadem allegedly refused to pay, an altercation ensued, which later escalated into a violent clash.
As tensions mounted, residents from both villages gathered at Kalikachh Bazar armed with locally made weapons and used torchlights while engaging in the confrontation. The violence left one person dead and at least 30 others injured.
Confirming the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police of Brahmanbaria Md Obaidur Rahman said, “One person has been killed in the clash. Police are trying to bring the situation under control.”
