The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance has announced a month-long programme from 1 July to 5 August, demanding the implementation of the public verdict expressed through the referendum and swift trials for the mass killings related to the July Uprising.
The programme was announced today (25 June) by alliance coordinator AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad following a meeting at Jamaat’s central office in Dhaka.
Speaking at the briefing, Hamidur said, “The July–August 2024 mass uprising was a united movement against discrimination, authoritarianism, and fascist rule, which claimed over 1,400 lives.”
“The nation is being deceived by abandoning the reform agenda. Efforts are underway to re-establish a form of authoritarian rule through the parliamentary system,” he said.
He further stated that the judicial process regarding the July killings and other major historical incidents had not progressed as expected.
He called for the swift completion of trials over the 28 October 2006 violence, the 2013 Shapla Chattar incident, and the July–August 2024 mass killings.
As part of the programme, seminars will be held at district and metropolitan from 1 to 15 July, while graffiti campaigns will also be organised.
Protest programmes are scheduled in all districts and metropolitan areas outside Dhaka on 4 July. On 6 July, families of those killed during the movement will form a human chain in front of the National Parliament and submit a memorandum to the speaker.
A national seminar will be held on 8 July, while divisional rallies are scheduled in Mymensingh on 27 June, Rangpur on 11 July, Barishal on 18 July and Sylhet on 25 July.
A special discussion titled “The Contribution of Women in the July Uprising” will be held on 20 July with the participation of women activists.
The alliance will also organise art exhibitions and commemorative gatherings at key locations associated with the July movement from 23 to 25 July.
On 31 July, special prayers will be offered in mosques and other places of worship across the country.
The programme will conclude on 5 August with rallies at district, metropolitan and upazila nationwide, including in the capital.
