Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said the country has 59 television channels, 1,436 newspapers and 474 online news portals, including both public and private entities, while 39 channels, including four state-owned ones, are currently operating broadcast activities.
The minister disclosed the information in response to a written question from Dhaka-19 lawmaker Dewan Mohammad Salahuddin in parliament today (22 June).
The question-answer session was tabled with the speaker in the chair.
Dewan asked how many private TV channels currently exist in Bangladesh and what their names are.
He also wanted to know the number of daily newspapers and online newspapers.
In response, Zahir said, “Currently, the number of state-owned TV channels in the country is four and the number of private TV channels that have received no-objection certificates is 55. At present, 39 channels, including four state-owned ones, are operating broadcast activities.”
The minister further said 1,436 daily newspapers are currently published across Bangladesh, including 593 from Dhaka and 843 from other districts, while the number of registered online news portals stands at 474.
Of them, 282 fall under the online news portal category, 131 under the online news portal category of daily newspapers, and 61 under the online news portal (regional) category, he added.
