Police arrested four members of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations after they held a flash procession in Sylhet city this morning (16 June).
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Monjurul Alam confirmed the arrests, saying legal action is underway and drives are continuing to detain others involved.
The arrestees were identified as Ibrahim Mostafa Mahi, Saniad Ahmed, Redwan Ahmed Rabbi, and Ashraful Ahmed Shafi.
According to police, around 40–50 activists brought out a procession in the Nawab Road area of the city around 7:30am. The march began near the PDB office and proceeded towards Madina Market.
A police vehicle was seen moving alongside the procession, but officers did not intervene at the time due to the size of the gathering, witnesses said.
The procession carried banners demanding the lifting of the ban on the party, the release of “political prisoners,” and the withdrawal of what they described as “false cases.”
Social media footage showed participants chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans as they marched.
Police later conducted a drive and detained four individuals at the scene. They were taken to Kotwali Police Station and produced before a court later the same day.
