An opposition lawmaker has demanded a statement in parliament under Rule 300 regarding the reported incident in which Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman was prevented from entering India and returned from Delhi airport.
Raising the issue on a point of order in parliament today (15 June), Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker from Dhaka-12 Md Saiful Alam Khan Milon described the incident as an “extremely sensitive and serious matter” linked to national dignity.
He called for a statement from the relevant minister under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure.
In response, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, who was presiding over the sitting at the time, said the matter was not admissible as a point of order.
However, he added that the matter could be considered if a formal notice was submitted through the proper parliamentary procedure.
The incident involving Zahed Ur Rahman took place yesterday (14 June).
According to reports, the prime minister’s adviser arrived in Delhi that day. Although the necessary diplomatic communications had reportedly been completed before the visit, airport authorities kept him waiting for two hours at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport.
He was later granted permission to enter India but subsequently returned to Bangladesh.
Saiful Alam Khan Milon alleged that the incident was the result of a diplomatic failure.
He sought an explanation from the government regarding what immediate steps or formal protest, if any, had been conveyed to the Indian authorities following the incident.
