Seven Bangladeshi citizens have returned home through the Tamabil land port in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila after completing prison terms in India for illegal entry.
They were handed over to Bangladeshi authorities at the Tamabil immigration checkpost around 3pm today (9 June) in the presence of Border Security Force (BSF), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and officials from both countries, confirmed Sub-Inspector Md Bazlur Rashid, in-charge of Tamabil Immigration Police.
According to police, the returnees had earlier entered India illegally through different border points in Gowainghat upazila. Indian police later arrested them and produced them before a court, which sent them to jail.
After serving their sentences in a jail of Shillong district in Meghalaya, they were repatriated following a formal request from the Bangladesh government and completion of necessary legal procedures by Indian immigration authorities.
The returnees are: two brothers from Naigang area in Sunamganj Sadar upazila – Md Muhibur Rahman and Abdul Quddus; Manik Ahmed of Tuker Bazar village; Md Suhel Ahmed of Chanpur village; Md Al Amin of Bongao village; Badshah Mia of Srihai village in Shalla upazila; and Restley Blah of Sangrampunji area in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet.
Bazlur Rashid said the seven were received following due legal process and handed over to their respective family members later.
