Police have arrested a youth in Bagerhat for allegedly sharing an “offensive” Facebook post with a photo of Zaima Rahman, the daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The accused, identified as Sheikh Rasul alias Rafiqul, 24, was arrested from the Bandhal area of Kachua upazila last night and sent to jail by a court today (9 June).
According to police, Rafiqul, son of Jahid Sheikh of Gopalpur village in the upazila, had shared on his Facebook account a post containing a photo of Zaima and a statement that investigators deemed objectionable.
Kachua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam said the post had originally appeared on another Facebook account and was later downloaded and republished by the accused from his own account.
A case was subsequently filed with the police station under the Special Powers Act by a complainant named Abdus Salam.
Bagerhat Court Police Inspector Md Mujibur Rahman said the accused was presented before the court of Judicial Magistrate Jebunnesa. “Following a preliminary hearing, the court ordered that he be sent to jail,” he added.
