A Highway Police vehicle was attacked and vandalised today (9 June) in the Nimsar Bazar area of Burichang upazila under Cumilla on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway over the seizure of illegal three-wheelers.
The incident occurred around 11am in the Nimsar Bazar area, creating tension in the locality and briefly disrupting traffic movement on the highway.
According to police and local sources, a patrol team from Highway Police Station seized several illegal three-wheelers to maintain discipline on the highway. Enraged by the move, a group of three-wheeler drivers launched an attack on the police.
At one stage, the attackers hurled bricks and vandalised the Highway Police vehicle, causing extensive damage.
Md Abdul Momin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Moynamati Highway Police Station confirmed the matter, saying a group of around 30 to 35 people carried out the sudden attack following the seizure of the vehicles.
“The attackers threw bricks at the police vehicle, beat it with sticks and created a tense situation in the area,” he said.
Additional police personnel were later deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control. Traffic movement on the highway subsequently returned to normal.
The OC said efforts are underway to identify those involved in the attack and take legal action against them.
