Police have arrested 13 leaders and activists of the Jubo League and Chhatra League in connection with a flash procession in Chattogram city, where participants tied white cloths resembling funeral shrouds around their heads.
In a press release issued today (6 June), Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s (CMP) Double Mooring Police Station said the arrests were made following the procession yesterday in the city’s Barik Building area.
Activists of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations gathered in two buses near the south side of Islami Bank Hospital building before beginning a sudden procession. Upon receiving information, police rushed to the scene, prompting the participants to flee through nearby alleys.
Law enforcers later recovered two buses, 10 sticks, four pieces of white cloth and 13 pieces of brick from the spot.
The arrestees were detained through intelligence-based operations conducted across different areas of the city on charges of involvement in the procession and alleged subversive activities, police said.
Videos circulated on social media showed participants carrying banners and wearing white clothes tied around their heads.
The procession moved from the port area along Sheikh Mujib Road towards Agrabad intersection before gathering in front of the Power Development Board building and chanting various slogans.
The banners carried during the procession demanded justice for children who died from measles and punishment for those involved in child rape incidents. They protested against increases in electricity and gas prices.
Analysis of the footage suggests that around 70 to 80 leaders and activists took part in the procession.
This was the third public procession in Chattogram city this month involving the activities-banned Awami League and its associate organisations.
