Two alleged robbers have been arrested today (2 June) in Narayanganj in connection with the robbery of two women outside their Mohammadpur residence after they returned to Dhaka following the Eid holidays.
The arrested individuals are Anwar Hossain and Jewel.
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Abdullah Al Mamun said Anwar Hossain had recently been involved in a series of robberies in the area, including the incident involving the two women, and that efforts were still underway to recover all the stolen items.
According to police sources, Anwar Hossain was arrested during a raid in the Bandar area of Narayanganj this afternoon.
During the operation, police recovered two machetes and a pickup vehicle allegedly used in the robbery.
Acting on information provided by the suspect, law enforcers also recovered three bags along with the stolen belongings.
Meanwhile, RAB-2 said it had arrested another suspect, Jewel, in connection with the same incident during a separate operation in Narayanganj.
RAB-2 Commander Md Khalidul Haque Hawlader said operations were still ongoing and details would be disclosed later.
Earlier, at around 3:45am on Sunday (31 May), two sisters were robbed on Nurjahan Road in Mohammadpur after returning from their hometown in Thakurgaon following the Eid holidays.
A video of the incident later circulated on social media.
The footage shows two women standing in front of the gate of a house alongside a battery-run autorickshaw and its driver. Suddenly, a man armed with a machete approaches and first threatens the autorickshaw driver. He then uses the weapon to intimidate the women before handing over their bags and belongings to an accomplice.
The two robbers did not stop there. They also searched the victims’ trousers and pajamas to check whether they were carrying anything in their pockets.
According to police sources, the two women had arrived in Shyamoli by bus after returning from Thakurgaon following the Eid holidays.
They then travelled by autorickshaw to their residence on Nurjahan Road, where they fell victim to the robbery.
One of the victims later filed a case with the police in connection with the incident.
