A father and his son were killed after a motorcycle collided with a pickup van in Chattogram’s Karnaphuli upazila this morning (2 June).
The accident occurred at around 8am near a connecting road adjacent to the Shah Amanat Bridge, police said.
The deceased were identified as Durgapada Mallik, 70, and his son Bidhan Mallik, 47, residents of Singhara village in Chatari union of Anwara upazila. Bidhan was a science teacher at Daulatpur Multipurpose High School in Karnaphuli.
According to family members, the two had been living in a rented house in the Patharghata area of Chattogram city.
Abu Sayeed Bakar, in-charge of Moijjartek Traffic Police, said a pickup van and a motorcycle were travelling from the Karnaphuli Bridge area towards Moijjartek when they collided near the First Stair point.
“Durgapada Mallik, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, died on the spot. The injured motorcycle rider, Bidhan Mallik, was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital,” he said.
Alauddin Talukder, a sub-inspector at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Bidhan was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was declared dead by the on-duty doctors.
“The body of his father, Durgapada Mallik, who died at the scene, was also brought to the hospital. Legal procedures in connection with the incident are underway,” he added.
Babla Mallik, a relative of the victims, said Bidhan had been taking his father back to their village home before heading to school.
“After dropping off his father, he was supposed to go to school. Sadly, both of them lost their lives in the accident,” he said.
