A woman was found dead in Chattogram’s Raozan, just an hour after her expatriate husband returned home from Dubai today (1 June).
The deceased, Priya Shil, 26, was the daughter of Sulal Shil and Rupna Shil of Sarkarhat in Hathazari upazila.
Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nizamuddin Dewan said police recovered the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
“At this stage, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, we will be able to confirm the actual cause of death after receiving the post-mortem report. Further legal action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
No formal complaint has been filed so far and police have not detained anyone in connection with the incident.
According to family members, Priya’s husband, Nayan Shil, was scheduled to return from Dubai on 10 June. However, he arrived home unexpectedly at around 10am today without informing anyone in advance.
About an hour later, at around 11am, family members found Priya’s body in a bathroom located a short distance from their residence in Bainya Pukur Par area of Ward 9 under Raozan municipality.
Priya and Nayan married in 2019 through a family arrangement.
Nayan claimed that his wife died by suicide by hanging herself in the bathroom. He said he broke open the door and recovered the body.
Priya’s mother, Rupna Shil, said she called her daughter’s mobile phone and an unidentified person answered, informing her that Priya had fallen into a drain and had been taken to hospital.
“When we reached the hospital, we learned that my daughter had already died,” she said.
Family members claimed that the couple had experienced marital problems. According to Rupna Shil, disputes frequently arose over the couple’s inability to have children.
