The makeshift cattle market set up beneath a metro rail station in Uttara’s Diabari area was cleared today (26 May) after police launched an immediate drive to restore order and ease traffic congestion caused by sacrificial animals being kept on roadsides.
This year, the capital’s largest Eid-ul-Adha cattle market has been established in Diabari, Uttara. With a huge influx of livestock from across the country, many traders had kept animals outside the designated market area, including on the main road and beneath the metro rail station, leading to severe traffic congestion.
In response, the Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) took a strict stance to bring discipline back to the market area, reads a statement issued this evening by DMP Media and Public Relations Division Deputy Commissioner NM Nasiruddin.
Police removed the cattle tied illegally under the metro rail station and cleared the occupied roads, allowing traffic movement to return to normal. The market leaseholder was also summoned to the spot and formally warned.
Authorities said mobile courts would be conducted and fines imposed if the directives are violated.
