A crew member aboard the container vessel MV MSC KYMEA II died today (24 May) on board while the ship was sailing towards Chattogram Port, according to shipping sources.
The deceased was identified as Md Hanif Hussain, 56, an Indian national who was serving as bosun on the vessel.
Harbour Master of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), Zahirul Islam, confirmed the details.
He said the vessel’s Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Club has been informed of the incident, while local correspondent Interport Maritime Ltd. has started handling the preliminary investigation.
According to a statement from the ship’s local representatives, the crew member fell seriously ill while the vessel was approximately 200 nautical miles off the Chattogram coast.
The vessel’s master reportedly sought an emergency medical evacuation after the crew member experienced severe breathing difficulties at around 7:45am while still conscious.
However, the master later confirmed that the bosun died on board at around 9am.
Shipping sources said the preliminary cause of death is suspected to be sudden heart failure.
The vessel is expected to arrive in Chattoram port by Monday morning.
Authorities are also coordinating with law enforcement agencies to complete the evacuation of the body and other legal formalities after the vessel arrives at Chattogram Port.
Earlier, on 19 May, a Thai crew member was stabbed to death on a vessel anchored at the outer anchorage of the port.
