Five more children were allegedly subjected to rape or attempted rape in three separate incidents in Chattogram within a day of the alleged attempted rape of a four-year-old girl in the city’s Bakalia area, police said.
Police detained three men in connection with the incidents in the Double Mooring, Bayazid Bostami and Khulshi areas in connection with the incidents.
According to police and local sources, police detained madrasa teacher Abdul Baten last night (22 May) over allegations of attempting to rape two sisters, aged 10 and 6, in the Ambagan area under Khulshi Police Station.
The incident reportedly took place at a madrasa near the railway line adjacent to the Khulshi Weather Office.
Police said the accused, whose home is in Cumilla, taught the two children. Confirming the detention, Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman said the accused was taken into custody at around 11pm.
Earlier, in another incident, a man was arrested on allegations of attempting to rape two girls, aged 10 and 6, in an abandoned plot beside Agrabad Hazipara Sunnia Mosque under Double Mooring Police Station at around 12:30pm.
According to police, the father of one of the children caught the accused, Mohammad Ehesan, 50, and handed him over to police after informing them of the incident. Ehesan is a resident of Amirabad in Lohagara upazila.
Double Mooring Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin Khan said the accused was detained by locals and handed over to police, who then took legal action and sent him to court.
Meanwhile, Bayazid Bostami Police Station arrested Mohammad Hasan over allegations of raping a five-year-old girl.
Police said the incident took place on Thursday (21 May) night when the child was allegedly lured with Tk10 and taken into a room. After the child informed her family, a case was filed with the police station.
Confirming the arrest, Bayazid Police Station Investigation Officer Mostafa Kamal said the accused was arrested following the case filed by the victim’s family.
He added that the child was sent to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Chattogram Medical College Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
The incidents come a day after unrest broke out in Bakalia following the arrest of Monir Hossain over allegations of raping a four-year-old child.
According to police, an angry crowd blocked a police vehicle carrying the accused and attempted to snatch him away while he was being taken to the police station on Thursday afternoon.
Clashes later broke out between police and locals. Police said brickbats were thrown at officers and several police vehicles were vandalised and set on fire.
To disperse the crowd, police fired tear gas shells, sound grenades and blank rounds. At least 30 people, including police personnel and journalists, were injured during the violence.
After remaining surrounded for several hours, police moved the accused and produced him in court the next day.
Police later filed a separate case over the vandalism and arson.
