Khadija Yasmin, daughter of notorious militant Subrata Bain, has been shown arrested as a suspected accused in an attempted murder case filed during the July Uprising in the Bhatara area of the capital.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam approved a police petition today (23 May) to show her arrested in the case, confirmed state prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuzzoha Sumon.
The investigation officer of the case, Bhatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Aminur Rahman, submitted the petition on 15 May. The court later fixed today for hearing the matter in her presence.
The petition stated that during the investigation, information was found that the suspected accused was present at the scene and involved in the incident.
It also said there was witness testimony and evidence that she was seen multiple times engaging in provocative conversations with armed activists linked to Chhatra League, Jubo League and Swechchhasebak League in the Bhatara area.
The investigation further claimed that she was directly and indirectly involved in the incident. It added that keeping her in custody was necessary for a proper investigation and to ensure justice, as there was a risk she could abscond and disrupt the investigation if released on bail.
Meanwhile, during the hearing, with court permission, Khadija said, “Instead of this, execute me in crossfire. I have a child. I am being harassed with repeated cases. I live by working. Where would I get so much money? I am not involved in any politics.
How can I be linked with Chhatra League, Jubo League? I am being implicated only because of my father.”
“I was earlier granted bail in one case, but later shown arrested again in another case. I do not know why I am being repeatedly implicated. I went to see my father that day and was arrested from there. I can go to see my father as a daughter. During the July period I was in Sylhet for part-time work. I have no other involvement,” she added.
State prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuzzoha Sumon argued in favour of the arrest petition, saying the investigation officer sought the order due to the accused’s alleged involvement in the case. “No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused.”
The petition further stated that preliminary information and evidence indicate her direct and indirect involvement in the incident. “There is a risk she may abscond and disrupt the investigation if granted bail, making it necessary to show her arrested in the case.”
According to the case statement, during the nationwide quota reform movement, students launched peaceful protests after Sheikh Hasina referred to students as “Razakars” on 14 July 2024. The complaint said that the accused and others later attempted to suppress the movement with the support of party activists, police, BGB and other law enforcement agencies.
The complainant, Soheli Tamanna, joined a protest supporting students. On 5 August 2024 at around 11am in the Bhatara area, she alleged that 200 to 300 unidentified Awami League activists attacked protesters under the leadership and direction of the accused, using sticks, iron rods, hockey sticks and firearms.
She sustained gunshot injuries, lost functional ability in her left hand, and was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. She later filed a case with Bhatara Police Station.
Khadija Yasmin was detained by RAB from Cumilla on 15 December last year and later handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch. She has remained in custody since then.
