A case has been filed naming eight individuals, including the president and general secretary of Jhenaidah district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, over the attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, reports Prothom Alo.
The case was filed with Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station on Friday night (22 May), accusing 110 to 115 unnamed individuals as well.
Confirming the matter, Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Gokul Chandra Adhikari said NCP leader Tarek Reza filed the case.
The named accused are district Chhatra Dal President Imran Hossain, former president SM Saminuzzaman Samin, General Secretary Shahriar Russell, former vice-president Nayan Howlader, Islamic University unit Chhatra Dal Convener Sahed Ahmed, municipal Chhatra Dal Vice-President Mobarak Hossain, and leaders Hadu and Arafat Hossain.
In protest of the case, leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal brought out a procession in the town around 9pm. As the procession reached in front of the Sadar Police Station after marching through different roads, tension escalated.
They demanded that Nasiruddin, who was inside the police station, be handed over.
Failing to enter the premises, they reportedly hurled brickbats.
Later, the protesters held a rally at Payra Chattar in the town, where senior leaders of Chhatra Dal addressed the gathering.
Earlier in the day, at least 17 leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP), including Nasiruddin Patwary, were attacked allegedly by members of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal in Jhenaidah.
Nasiruddin Patwary came under attack and was pelted with eggs while leaving the Old Collectorate Jame Mosque in Jhenaidah town after Jummah prayers.
Tension continues to prevail in the town following the incident.
