Dhaka South City Corporation will distribute 140,000 biodegradable bags among residents to ensure the quick and organised disposal of sacrificial animal waste during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
The distribution programme was inaugurated today (22 May) on Elephant Road in the capital by DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam. Alongside the biodegradable bags, the city corporation is also distributing bleaching powder and Savlon disinfectant.
According to DSCC officials, the corporation will distribute 140,000 biodegradable bags, 40 tonnes of bleaching powder, and 1,050 litres of Savlon across the southern parts of the capital ahead of Eid.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Abdus Salam urged residents to place sacrificial waste inside the bags and leave them at designated locations so that DSCC workers can collect them promptly.
He also warned residents not to dump sacrificial waste into drains or sewers, saying it could spread diseases and worsen waterlogging during rainfall.
The DSCC administrator said the main waste removal operation will begin from 12pm on Eid day, with a target to clear all sacrificial waste generated on the first day within the following eight hours.
The distribution programme formally began through the handover of biodegradable bags, bleaching powder and Savlon to the organisation Hridoye Elephant Road Society.
DSCC officials said residents will be able to collect the bags and bleaching powder from their respective ward offices and from primary waste collection service providers responsible for door-to-door waste collection in their areas.
