A Dhaka court sentenced Mohammad Rezaul Karim Madbor to death for killing his wife, Seema Akhtar, by slitting her throat a decade ago in Ashulia following a family feud.
On Thursday (21 May), acting judge Md Abdullah Al Masud of Dhaka’s seventh additional district and sessions judge court announced the verdict. The court also fined the fugitive convict Tk10,000. An arrest warrant was issued against him.
State prosecutor Ziaul Haque Zia confirmed the information.
According to case documents, the couple lived with their child at Afaz Uddin’s rented house on Idris College Road in Ashulia. The victim worked at a local garment factory, while the accused was unemployed. He used to beat her for asking him to work.
On 24 April 2016, Rezaul hit his wife on the head following an argument. After she fell unconscious, he cut her throat with a sharp weapon. The house owner and locals caught him as he tried to flee and handed him over to police.
The victim’s father, Md Jahidul Islam, filed a murder case with the Ashulia police station. On 31 August 2016, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused. The court framed charges on 11 January of the following year and recorded testimony from 12 witnesses during the trial.
