At least nine horses were slaughtered for meat in the Purbachal area of Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila, while 12 others were rescued during a raid by law enforcement agencies today (27 March).
The recovery took place at a plot in the Hararbari area of Sector 10 in Purbachal after police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel responded to a distress call, officials said.
Confirming the incident, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shabzel Hossain said a group of men were slaughtering horses at the site with the intention of selling the meat.
“The plot owner arrived at the scene unexpectedly, prompting the individuals to flee, leaving the slaughtered animals behind,” the police official told The Business Standard.
Following a call to the national emergency helpline 999, police and RAB conducted a raid at the location and recovered the carcasses along with 12 live horses, including a foal, he added.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far, and no formal complaint has been filed.
Authorities later buried the recovered meat following instructions from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), while the rescued horses have been handed over to the relevant authorities for care and supervision, according to police.
