A five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the killing of Asma Sadia Runa, an assistant professor and chair of the Social Welfare Department at Islamic University (IU).
The information was disclosed through an official order signed by the university’s acting registrar Prof Dr Manjurul Haque today (7 March).
The committee has been instructed to submit a report on the incident as soon as possible.
Professor Dr Mizanoor Rahman of the Accounting and Information Systems Department, who has been appointed convener of the committee, said a meeting regarding the matter has been scheduled for 9:30am on Monday (9 March).
The murder took place on Wednesday (4 March) when Fazlur Rahman, an employee of the Political Science Department, entered Runa’s office in the Theology and Islamic Studies building and stabbed her.
Students later discovered the teacher lying in a pool of blood and found Fazlur in the same room with severe injuries, in what appeared to be an attempted suicide.
Both were rescued by the university’s proctorial body and police and taken to hospital, where Runa was declared dead.
Following an autopsy the next morning, her body was handed over to the family. After Zuhr prayers, her funeral was held at Kushtia Municipal Eidgah ground, and she was later buried at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard.
Meanwhile, Fazlur confessed to the murder in a written statement on Wednesday night.
Police said he provided the two-page confession while undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital.
In the statement, Fazlur said he carried out the attack out of deep resentment after the department head allegedly initiated his transfer and stopped his salary.
Police have since shown him arrested in the case. However, as he remains seriously injured, he is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Kushtia General Hospital.
A doctor at the hospital said that although Fazlur remains in the ICU, his condition is no longer life-threatening. While he is unable to speak, he is conscious and responds to questions by writing on paper.
